What these recent projects tell you
Use this hub to see how KZN Catering Equipment handles real kitchens in Durban and across KwaZulu-Natal, from tight back-of-house restaurant spaces to larger canteen and hospital production areas. The listing cards are added separately, but this page gives you the context you need to choose the right example to study first.
Some projects focus on fast service and short lead times, while others need strong cold storage, heavy cooking capacity, or careful hygiene control. A good match is usually the one that looks most like your own site in size, menu and daily volumes.
Project types we cover across the province
Our recent work includes food service spaces that need practical layouts and equipment that can stand up to daily use, power interruptions and humid coastal conditions. We work from Glen Anil, Durban and cover Durban North, Umhlanga, Pinetown, Ballito and Pietermaritzburg.
- Restaurants and takeaways needing compact cooking lines
- Hospitals and care facilities with strict food safety flow
- Canteens and staff feeding units with steady batch production
- Prep areas, servery points and cold room support spaces
- Upgrade projects where old equipment must be replaced in stages
How to compare one kitchen project with another
When you open a project page, look past the pictures and check the planning choices behind them. Space, extraction, drainage, power supply and storage all change the final outcome. A 40 seater bistro and a 300 meal canteen may both need a neat layout, but the equipment list and movement flow will be very different.
It helps to compare projects on three things: how much food is produced, how often the kitchen is cleaned down, and how much room is available for staff movement. That gives you a clearer view of what may work on your own premises, and what will not.
From site survey to sign-off
Most projects start with a site survey and a proper layout discussion. Priya Naidoo, our Kitchen Design Lead, works with the team to map equipment positions, extraction points and service clearances before procurement starts. Then Siyabonga Mkhize and Jared Pillay handle the practical side on site, so the installation matches the drawing and the real building conditions.
- Kitchen layouts and equipment specification
- Extractor planning and stainless fabrication
- Equipment installation and commissioning
- Preventive maintenance, breakdown repairs and staff training
Equipment choices shaped by local conditions
KZN sites often face heat, humidity and load-shedding, so the equipment needs to suit local conditions, not just the menu. Refrigeration must hold temperature reliably, prep areas need decent airflow, and cooking lines should be arranged so staff can keep working when the pace picks up. In coastal areas, corrosion and cleaning routines matter too.
We also pay attention to municipal requirements, grease management and safe discharge planning where the site calls for it. That saves time later, especially on busy builds in Durban North, Umhlanga and Ballito where access and operating hours can be tight.
Who is behind the project work
These projects are supported by a small in-house team that knows commercial food service from the ground up. Mandla Sibusiso Dlamini leads the business as Managing Director, with Annelise van Wyk handling procurement, Luyanda Zungu overseeing service, and the installation team keeping the work practical on site.
If you are planning a new kitchen or trying to improve an existing one, this hub is the best place to start. Choose a recent project that feels closest to your own brief, then speak to us about the equipment and layout behind it.
